DatePlan User's Guide

Thank you for using DatePlan !

This documentation covers DatePlan version 1.27.
26-DEC-2001

Introduction

DatePlan adds a neat feature to Palm's standard Datebook app (and its variants from HandEra and Sony), as well as to Pimlico's Datebk series (version 3.0+) and Handspring's Datebook+ : it allows you to graphically tag each day of the month depending on your plans.

This is the first planner that fully integrates with Datebook : of course you can easily navigate, with a single tap, from DatePlan to Datebook's day or week views (and to any of the other views, if you use Datebk series or Datebook+), but also from Datebook to DatePlan.

Thanks to its full integration to Datebook, DatePlan is light-weight. Yet, it offers you most of the advantages of several times larger apps. Moreover, since it relies on Datebook, DatePlan doesn't change the way your appointments are handled. No proprietary format. Date Plan is an removable extension of Datebook, not a replacement.

Please note that DatePlan is shareware. The evaluation period is 30 days long. If you continue to use DatePlan after 30 days, you are required to register.

To get the latest version of DatePlan, please visit Ablivio's web page at : http://www.ablivio.com, or download directly the latest dateplan.zip at : http://www.ablivio.com/dateplan/getit.htm.

Using DatePlan

Overview

Here is a typical screenshot of DatePlan.

Overview

Basically, DatePlan allows you to graphically tag each day of the month, depending on your plans. Just pick a tag in the toolbar, and apply it to the days of your choice, to remind you that you'll do some special thing or that you'll be in some special place.

There are currently 24 different available tags, and you can affect up to 3 tags per day (typically, morning/noon/afternoon or morning/afternoon/evening, but it's up to you). For instance, you'll use one tag to mark periods when you are on the road, another for your off-days, another for special events, etc.

DatePlan doesn't replace Datebook, but extends it so that you can organize your plans without having to browse in it.

The point is that you don't want to duplicate in DatePlan all events you record in Datebook. That's why DatePlan makes a graphical summarization of Datebook records to remind you if there are events scheduled on a given day, in 3 configurable time slots, plus untimed events.

Moreover, DatePlan fully integrates with Datebook. Want to look at a given day to set a new event or to read existing ones ? Just tap on the date and you're done ! Want to get back from Datebook ? Tap on the "month view" button in Datebook, and you're back. Want to have a week view ? Tap on the week selector and DatePlan brings you to the corresponding week view in Datebook.

DatePlan displays weeks the way you are used to, either US-styled (Sunday to Saturday) or European-styled (Monday to Sunday). There are also options to auto-tag week-ends, and to display fiscal weeks numbers

Note : The view selector depends on which datebook you use :

In the following, it is assumed that you use the standard Datebook, but DatePlan works exactly the same with other flavors!

Tagging

Tagging is the most common task with DatePlan. It's quite easy : just pick a tag in the toolbar and apply it to the days of your choice.

You can affect up to 3 tags per day : Day box

Usually, one will use those 3 places to tag, from left to right, morning, noon and afternoon, or morning, afternoon and evening. But it's up to you.

Here is the toolbar : Toolbar

Tap on a tag in the toolbar to select it. The currently selected tool is surrounded like this : Selected tag

If you tap a second time on the tool, you unselect it. By default, no tool is selected, to prevent you from accidentally tagging days.

You can tag several days at once. To do, once you've selected a tool, put the stylus on the first day and extend the selection until the last day. Beware : if your selection extends over already tagged zones, they will be overwritten.

Extend selection

That's it !

Select tool Extend selection That's it !

Tip : Tapping on an individual tag with the matching tool removes the tag. It's pretty useful when you if you want to remove a tag you've just set (for instance, because your selection was a bit to wide, or because you want to make "holes" in a continuous band), and more convenient than selecting the white tag (the "no tag" tag !) to overwrite the tag you want to remove.

Datebook summarization

DatePlan automatically summarizes Datebook scheduled events in 3 different time slots, plus untimed events.

Let's have an example : Datebook summarization

Day 1 : untimed event, which is symbolized by a vertical thick dash.
Day 2 : at least one event in the 1st time slot (by default, from midnight to noon).
Day 3 : at least one event in the 2nd time slot (by default, from 11am to 3pm).
Day 4 : at least one event in the 3rd time slot (by default, from 2pm to midnight).
Day 5 : untimed event and at least one event matching each time slot (can be one long event from 8am to 8pm, or several short events).

Time slots can be customized at your taste. See Options and Preferences

[Back to "Using DatePlan"]

Holidays auto-tagging

Each untimed event in Datebook, of which description begins with "H-" (a capitalized h followed by a dash), the corresponding day will be automatically grayed. This allows you to have holidays defined in the Datebook and automatically reported in DatePlan month view.

Options and Preferences

To reach the Options and Preferences form, use menu Options/Preferences.

Options and preference form

Time slots

There are 3 definable time slots, each matching an indicator of the scheduled events summarizer.

A time slot is defined by 2 times (begin, end). A scheduled event matches the time slot if part of this event occurs during the time slot :

Times slot matching

By default, time slots are configured as follows :

Time slot 1 00:00 12:00
Time slot 2 11:00 15:00
Time slot 3 14:00 23:55

Tap on a time slot to change its boundaries :

Time slots definition

It brings to to a dialog which allows you to define start and end times.

Time slot definition

If you tap on "No Time", the time slot will be disabled.

Note : if you want DatePlan to take in account all Datebook scheduled events, you must define time slots 1, 2 and 3 so that the whole day (00:00 - 23:55) is matched by their union. If you leave "holes", some events may not appear in DatePlan summaries.

[Back to "Options and Preferences"]

Weekends auto-tagging

If you check the "Auto-tag weekends" box in the Preferences form, DatePlan will automatically gray Saturdays and Sundays. Note that this won't affect existing tags on Saturdays and/or Sundays.

Auto-tag off Auto-tag off
Auto-tag on Auto-tag on

[Back to "Options and Preferences"]

Untimed events hiding

If you uncheck the "Show untimed events" box in the Preferences form (it's checked by default), DatePlan will hide untimed events in the month view. It helps making the month view clearer when you have a lot of untimed events (for instance if you use them to remember birthdays).

Fiscal weeks off Show untimed events
Fiscal weeks on Hide untimed events

[Back to "Options and Preferences"]

Fiscal weeks

If you check the "Display fiscal weeks" box in the Preferences form, DatePlan will compute and display week numbers starting from the first week of the month you specified, and add "FY" and the year in the title bar.

The first week of the month is defined as the 1st week which contains a Thursday.

Pilot (PalmOS 1.x) specifics

On a Pilot running PalmOS 1.x, there is no day/week/month view selector in Datebook, so I had to implement a specific way to get back to DatePlan...

DatePlan is shareware. That means that you can download, use and completely free test the program for 30 days. You may also distribute and copy unregistered versions of DatePlan to others as long as the files in the original DATEPLAN.ZIP archive is not tampered and no fee is charged. If you find the program useful and you continue to use it, you are obligated to register.

The whole shareware concept is based on honesty. The registration fee you pay allow me to support and continue to develop DatePlan in the future.

When you register DatePlan, you will get the most recent registered version of the program, without any shareware nags, or delay screens.

How to register for DatePlan ?

Registration entitles you to all future corrective updates of DatePlan and to special rates (possibly free) for evolutive updates.

When you register, you get a registration code. You merely have to enter it in DatePlan, using menu "Info/Register". Then, if you select "Info/About...", you'll be able to check that your copy of DatePlan is registered to you.

Note : Once you've entered the registration code, the "Register" menu item is not removed from menu "Info". I did this because removing it would require additional "cosmetic" code, hence a larger app.

Cheaper ! Direct registration

The registration fee can be paid directly to me using the following currencies and rates :

US Dollars ($) 13 USD
Euro 15 EUR

Just mail me your registration fee (no checks, nor other currencies than above, thanks !) :

About X-Master

X-Master is a freeware application. It follows the de facto standard introduced by HackMaster (http://www.daggerware.com) for the implementation of "hacks" on PalmOS, Therefore X-Master is a really useful tool and we highly recommend it.
